Introduction
Welcome to a history of the 2 Glenugie distilleries, the better known one in Burnhaven (Peterhead), and the little known one in Longside. In the last few decades the history of these two distilleries has been mixed together due to them having the same name. The history of Glenugie is typically described as opening around 1830, then a few years later it converted into a brewery before reopening as a distillery in 1875. Looking into historic records show that the original Glenugie distillery opened a bit before 1830 in Longside, 10 miles from the one we know these days. This lasted into the 1850's before closing for good. The Peterhead distillery originally started production as a whisky distillery in late 1874 as the Invernettie distillery, and was only renamed to Glenugie in 1885. It survived until 1982.
